When key detection can be wrong

Live recordings, tempo changes, dense harmony, key changes, weak drums, and vocal-heavy or very short clips can produce an uncertain answer. Relative major and minor keys use the same notes, so a song key finder can reasonably prefer either one.

Use a clear section with both rhythm and harmony, then confirm the root note and pulse by ear before mixing or transposing.

How the browser finds key and tempo

The key finder music analysis measures energy around musical-note frequencies, groups those notes into twelve pitch classes, and compares the resulting chroma profile with major and minor key profiles. The tempo analysis compares repeating onset intervals in the audio.

The result includes the key name, major or minor mode, its Camelot wheel code, BPM, and the related half-speed and double-speed interpretations.
